OLCV e-bulletin: Scorecard coming soon!

Date:
September 10, 2009

Do your legislators care about the environment? You can find out soon in OLCV's 2009 Environmental Scorecard for the 2009 Oregon Legislature. Check out the 2007 Scorecard.

Did your legislators vote to protect Oregon’s rivers and streams? Promote clean energy and create jobs? Fight the costly damage caused by invasive species? Phase out toxic chemicals that threaten our health?

This year's Scorecard will:

  • Score votes on 21 key environmental bills from the 2009 session
  • Include a bill graveyard detailing important bills that died--and who killed them
  • Show who scored higher than 90%, who scored less that 25%, and whose scores DECREASED since the last session

And this year, the action doesn't stop with the Scorecard. It's not enough just to know the score. We'll help you tell your legislators what you think of their scores. Thank them for protecting Oregon's environmental legacy, or let them know if you are disappointed in their votes. We'll make it easy for you on our newly designed website, set to launch before we release the Scorecard.

The picture here is NOT the Scorecard cover! ... So who won the Photo Contest?

Many of you entered beautiful photos of yourselves, your friends, your families and your canine companions enjoying special places in Oregon. But we could choose only one for the Scorecard cover and, well, you'll have to wait until the Scorecard comes out to see it. Three runners up are featured inside the Scorecard as well. Thanks to everyone who entered photos into the contest. You may see yours in a future E-bulletin!

This year, for the first time ever, you will have a chance to vote for your environmental champion in OLCV's People's Choice Awards. Here's how:

1. When the Scorecard is released, check it out to see how our elected leaders voted on clean energy, fish and wildlife habitat, and other environmental priorities.

2. Then, cast your vote online (on OLCV's newly re-designed website) for the legislator you think did the best job of preserving what we love about Oregon for generations to come.

We'll announce the winner in October.

Deschutes County rallies for the environment

The OLCV Deschutes County Chapter’s Second Annual Summer BBQ fundraiser took Bend, Oregon by storm two weeks ago. August 22nd marked the culmination of more than a month’s worth of work done by the dedicated Deschutes County steering committee.

It began as a concept with legs: make the event environmentally responsible, emphasize the great work that local OLCV-endorsed officials have accomplished on behalf of the environment, and show our community a great time….all on a shoestring.

Enter stage left, Paul Schmitz, owner of Boxcar Productions, a deep green building company. Continue reading Ben Gordon's post on the OLCV Blog.

OLCV Development Director Molly Kramer shares her summer sabbatical experience:

For four weeks this summer, I was fortunate to have a sabbatical from my job as Development Director with OLCV. I decided to spend most of my time off in a part of the state I’d been eager to visit, but never had: the Wallowas, in northeastern Oregon.

I decided this would be a solo journey, with my dog Porkchop as my only companion. Planning months in advance, I imagined Chops and I backpacking among pristine alpine lakes, camping in meadows and breathing in the solitude and beauty of the backcountry. I imagined rugged hikes up steep canyon walls and the sense of adventure and accomplishment that comes with camping alone in the wilderness.

Then I sprained my ankle... Continue reading Molly's post on the OLCV Blog.

DEQ seeks air quality committee members

Are you are interested in serving on an Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) air quality advisory committee?

The 2009 Oregon Legislature adopted several bills related to Oregon’s climate change strategy. DEQ has authority to proceed with three specific measures: low carbon fuel standard, a study of truck efficiency and reduced idling, and expansion of greenhouse gas reporting. These are all environmental priorities OLCV worked for with the Oregon Conservation Network.

DEQ is recruiting skilled and knowledgeable people for the Low Carbon Fuel Standard advisory committee and Truck Efficiency and Reduced Idling workgroup. In order to be considered for either of these committees, please fill out an interest form by September 21, 2009 (links to web pages below).
Connect to OLCV--and check out our new website, coming soon!

We've been working this summer on a new website design, set to launch this month. The new olcv.org will be easier to navigate and have more interactive capabilities. It will be your online source for all the latest information on pro-environment candidates, legislation that protects Oregon's environmental legacy, and opportunities to get involved in your local OLCV chapter.

But there are other ways to stay informed on OLCV and the Oregon Conservation Network's activities.
