OLCV e-bulletin: People's Choice, Roast & Toast, Shifts in Salem

Date:
October 8, 2009

By now, you've probably checked out OLCV's Environmental Scorecard for the 2009 Oregon Legislature. Uh oh. No? Check it out here.

But then what? Well, did you tell your legislators what you thought of their scores? It's easy. Just click on the legislator and then follow the link to contact them. Tell your legislators how they can best represent you. Your voice matters!

And there is another way to send your legislators a message: Vote for the one you think did the best job of protecting Oregon's environmental legacy in OLCV's first-ever People's Choice Awards.

The votes are adding up and you might be surprised who has the lead right now. We will close the poll Monday night at midnight and announce the winner later next week. Vote now!

Join us to “Roast & Toast” Jonathan Poisner next Thursday, October 15, from 6 to 8pm in Portland.

Jonathan is leaving OLCV after 12 years as Executive Director.  Help us send him off in style by celebrating all the things we, um, love about him.

Learn more and get tickets here. RSVP today!

Welcome Jon Isaacs

With the departure of longtime executive director Jonathan Poisner, OLCV welcomes Jon Isaacs into the top spot.

Jon (pictured right with son Jay) most recently served as State Director in the office of U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, after managing Merkley’s successful senatorial campaign against Gordon Smith in 2008. That campaign was the first to unseat an incumbent United States Senator in Oregon in 40 years.

Jon also served as Executive Director of FuturePAC, the political committee for the Oregon House Democrats, and has worked for a number of political organizations and candidates in Oregon as well as in Washington, D.C. Read more...

The legislature has seen some changes and big announcements in recent weeks. Here are the highlights:

Shields approved for Senate seat
Rep. Chip Shields (D-Portland) was appointed to fill the Senate seat vacated by Margaret Carter this summer. Shields' lifetime OLCV score is a 95 percent over his three terms in the Oregon House. He earned a 90 percent in 2009. As for Shields' now vacant House seat, candidates include Steve Adamson, Karol Collymore, Lew Frederick, Eddie Lincoln and Catherine Thomasson.

In addition, Val Hoyle (D-Eugene) was appointed to fill the west Lane County House seat vacated by Chris Edwards (who was appointed to replace Vicki Walker when she resigned her Senate seat this summer.) And Margaret Doherty (D-Tigard) was selected to replace Larry Galizio, who resigned his House seat.

Barton running for Senate
Freshman Rep. Brent Barton (D-Clackamas), who just scored 81 percent in OLCV's 2009 Environmental Scorecard, has announced his intention to run for the Senate seat currently filled by Rick Metsger (D-Welches). Metsger announced last month he would not be seeking re-election. Read about Barton's bid on Jeff Mapes' blog.

Bruun to challenge Schrader
Rep. Scott Bruun (R-West Linn) has announced he will run next year for the seat now held by U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.). Bruun earned 50 percent in this year's Environmental Scorecard, and holds a 48 percent lifetime OLCV score over his last three terms in the Oregon House.  Read about Bruun's announcement on Jeff Mapes' blog.
