OLCV e-bulletin: Nostalgia and new faces, fine dining and a progressive wine tasting

Nostalgia meets hope for the future

Some of us will fill our last days of summer with back to school shopping. Some of us will spend hours planning our last weekend get-away before the rain returns. But most of us, at one point or another during these waning days of summer, will feel a tinge of nostalgia for days past.

Unfortunately/fortunately, while we cannot return to the past, we can do our best to make sure our future exceeds our expectations.
As the days of summer draw to a close, we have the opportunity to do our part to protect the planet so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy healthier, greener lives.
Don't let this opportunity pass you by! Have fun, make new friends and most importantly, help reach out to the thousands of new voters who have been inspired by Barack Obama to become involved in the political process. Help make sure these new voters vote down the whole ballot (and not just for President) – with information about which local candidates they can trust to promote a healthy environmental legacy for Oregon.

Check out our calendar and sign up to volunteer now! While you're there you can RSVP for one of our upcoming events.

OLCV welcomes new staff

From our coastal shores to our high peaks and fertile valleys, the Pacific Northwest is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful regions in America.

Ryan Kauffman believes this is worth protecting. One of OLCV's new field organizers, Ryan grew up in Canby and after studying political science at Seattle University he worked at Greenpeace and People for Puget Sound. He was inspired to protect the environment after witnessing the destruction of Oregon's coastal forests as he was growing up. Ryan joined OLCV in this epochal election because he believes morality demands us all to do what we can to pass on a better world to our children. Ryan will be helping to elect Brent Barton and Toby Forsberg for State Representatives and Charlotte Lehan for Clackamas County Commissioner.

You can email Ryan to get involved with these campaigns at ryan@olcv.org.

Jeff Cramer joined the OLCV team this summer as a field organizer to help elect pro-environment candidates Nick Kahl for State Representative and Carla Piluso for Multnomah County Commissioner.

Prior to arriving in Portland Jeff worked on renewable energy projects for island communities off the coast of Maine and electronic waste management education in South America. As a recent transplant to the Northwest, he is especially excited to work with dedicated OLCV supporters and make 2008 a victorious election year for Oregon's environment.
Find out more about Nick and Carla at their websites: www.nickkahl.com and www.carlapiluso.com

You can email Jeff to get involved at jeff@olcv.org

We are looking to fill positions in Lane, Marion and Washington Counties. Check our website for more information on available job opportunities.

Tom Friedman nails it

"I don't always agree with Tom Friedman. But he has a way of putting things that gets to the point."

We may use your photo in a future issue of e-bulletin, on our website or in one of our printed publications. The bigger the file size, the better!

Answer: Ireland

Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams (and Mayor Elect) recently announced his plans to bring a resolution forward before the end of 2008 that will impose a fee on both paper and plastic check-out bags.
