OLCV e-bulletin: Developing our priorities, summer savings and sustainable summer fun
OLCV’s new Legislative Affairs Director, Evan Manvel, coordinates the Oregon Conservation Network (OCN), a consortium of environmental groups who work to pass laws to protect Oregon’s air, water, and land. The OCN is currently developing its priorities for the 2009 Legislative session. Here is Evan’s take on the process:
"Day-long meetings. Seemingly unending discussions. Coordinating the efforts of fifty different environmental organizations, each with its own mission, from all across Oregon. Finding a way to reach common agreement on shared priorities.
Perhaps “fun” is not the first word I would use to describe the Oregon Conservation Network. But here’s a word I would use: Power."
But isn't it fun to have power? Read the rest of Evan's take on our blog.
Who says you have to sacrifice comfort in order to save money?
Here are just a few things that come to mind when it comes to living comfortably while cutting costs:
1. Enjoy the outdoors! It's often much cooler outside than in your house. Instead of turning on your air conditioner, why not people watch in the park or relax in the shade with a good book?
2. Plant trees. According to the US Department of Agriculture, well-placed trees can reduce overall cooling expenses by as much as 30% and can even save you 20% - 50% on heating bills.
3. Use ceiling fans instead of an air conditioner. You'll use less energy and save money.
4. And while it may not come to mind immediately, we can make sure we stay cool and avoid paying more than we can afford in the future is by getting our friends to join us in voting for the pro-environment candidates running for office this November. Help elect candidates that will make fighting global warming a priority to ensure our children have a beautiful and healthy Oregon to enjoy for more than just a summer.
For a full list of pro-environment candidates that have received OLCV's seal of approval, and for up-to-date election news, visit www.olcv.org/elections.

Last month, over eighty people gathered at the 2008 Sustainable Seafood Bake and Silent Auction in Newport, Oregon.
(Pictured: local OLCV activist Rolla Cleaver, Newport City Councilor Jeff Bertuleit, community activist Carla Perry and Newport City Councilor Terry Obteshka)
The Sustainable Seafood Bake and Silent Auction is an annual fundraiser for the Lincoln County Chapter of OLCV and the entire event is organized by the all-volunteer Lincoln County steering committee.
Guests enjoyed music by Joe Jordan along with their choice of sustainable seafood: oysters or fresh caught halibut prepared by Laurie Card (pictured left), Cafe Mundo's famous chef. Laurie embodies our message on eating sustainably.
“It's healthy to eat what's in season, and we like using what's available locally,” Laurie said recently in an interview with the Newport News-Times.
We'd like to thank everyone who donated or purchased items in our silent auction. Thank you to all the restaurants, local businesses, artists and merchants who donated over 100 items to our auction this year. You can view the entire list on our website.

Question: What Oregon city is planning to be the first carbon-neutral city in Oregon?
Answer: Lincoln City
If it all goes right, Lincoln City will be the first city in Oregon to become carbon neutral.
"It shows enormous potential," councilor Rick Brissette said. "Just the idea that Lincoln City can become a zero-carbon community someday is just phenomenal."

I vote for pro-environmental candidates because we can’t afford to sacrifice long-term stewardship for short-term gains.
