Washington County Races Continue to Heat up as others take notice.

April 21, 2010

In just a few weeks voters in Oregon will receive their ballots for the May 18 Primary Election. With election day quickly approaching the big races in Washington County are starting to get exciting.

Dick Schouten

It is no secret that we are supporting Dick Schouten for Washington County Commission Chair. We have been talking about this race for quite some time and it is exciting to see support mount for Dick. It is clear that Dick is the candidate that we need at the helm of Washington County.

You don't have to take our word for it; here is what the Oregonian had to say about him:

"... Schouten, who is an experienced advocate for the environment, alternative modes of transportation, funding for the arts, parks and other livability issues. He is already an experienced commissioner and says he is committeed to continuing the county's practice of maintaining a 15 percent budget reserve, a practice that helped Washington County weather the recession with less pain than many counties. Voters should make the logical choice and elect him commission chairman."

SEIU has also recently endorsed Dick Schouten.

With momentum in the race picking up and ballots coming out soon it is important that we keep up the pace and make sure that voters know who Dick Schouten is and why he is the right choice for Washington County Commission Chair. Here are a few ways you can join in the fun and spread the word about this great candidate.

Sunday April 25, Canvass from Cooper Mountain Park 11a.m.-3p.m.

Tuesday April 27, Phonebank at the Washington County Dems 5:00p.m.-8:00p.m.

Thursday April 29, Phonebank at the Washington County Dems 5:00p.m.-8:00p.m.

Bob Stacey

Region-wide Bob Stacey is continuing to work hard to make Metro work for us as he vies to become our next Metro President.  This is a HUGE district and we still need to talk to tens of thousands of voters to ensure that Bob has the votes he needs to win. Voter-to-voter conversations are the best way to spread the word about Bob Stacey, but we can't do this alone.

Back at Bob Stacey’s campaign headquarters, Anna, OLCV’s organizer on the campaign, has a number of new opportunities to help Bob win. Visit our events page to find out which opportunities best fit your schedule and sign up to help Bob win today.

Other candidate tidbits...

This week Greg Mecklem, who is running for Washington County Commission District 4, will be opening his campaign office in Hillsboro. Join the fun as the campaign hosts an open house on Thursday, April 21 at 4:00p.m. We hope to see you there, but if you can't make it to the open house you will get another chance if you join us for the OLCV canvass for Greg Mecklem and Dick Schouten. Sign up for the event today!

Greg Malinowski has also been working hard and talking to voters in his campaign for Washington County Commission District 2. On May 8th we will be showing our support for him with a joint canvass also with Dick Schouten. Help two great candidates in one day, sign up today!

On the legislative side we are announcing our Enviro Week for Will Rasmussen in House District 37. We have an excellent opportunity to elect an environmental champ in this House District, it is also one of the hottest primaries in the state. Check out the Clackamas County Chapter site for more details and don't miss out on the action, sign up for an event or all four on May 3, May 4, May 5 or May 8th.

As a former coordinator of OLEV (now OLCV) at the time of its formation, as a former board member, and as a contributor for many years, I trust you will reorganize your effort in Washington County so that you can assist the two candidates for the county commission who supported the statewide planning goals during the reserve process. The future of land use in the County is at stake and, in my opinion, OLCV needs to thoughtfully pursue a change in strategy and staffing. If any members of the OLCV leadership are interested in discussing this matter further, please call me on my cell at 503-348-0882. In any event, I trust you will fully consult with the candidates and their organizations as to how OLCV can best assist the Washington County political effort that arose out of the land use issues. Those of us who were active in the reserves process were quite disappointed that OLCV failed to assist the early organizational effort to engage the city electorate in Washington County..

Also, I hope you will soon update your website to reflect the lineup for the general election.
