EDITORIAL: A 21st century bottle bill

Eugene Register-Guard The shape of a grand bargain on an update of Oregon’s 40-year-old bottle bill has been visible for the past couple of years: Recycling proponents would get a significant expansion of the types of containers covered by the deposit-and-return system, and grocers would obtain relief from the burden of processing used bottles and cans. The bargain was finally struck last week. Whether the bargain is a good one for Oregonians and the environment will depend on the convenience of a new system of redemption centers.
