"Cool Schools" signed into law!
June 23, 2011
Today Governor John Kitzhaber signed House Bill 2960 into law. Known as the “Cool Schools” legislation, HB 2960 unanimously passed both the Oregon House and Senate and blends environmental protection, job creation, and looking out for children, as it fast-tracks energy efficiency and health and safety upgrades for Oregon’s K-12 schools.
OLCV Executive Director Jon Isaacs released the following statement on “Cool Schools” becoming law:
“If you want to find a true success story for the 2011 Legislative Session, look no farther than ‘Cool Schools.’ This bill has been a top priority for OLCV and the Oregon Conservation Network because it shows that job creation and protecting our environment are natural partners. And, most importantly, ‘Cool Schools’ will do a great thing for our children: reduce harmful toxics in schools, improve indoor air quality, and give them healthier, safer places to learn and grow.
“People get that ‘Cool Schools’ is a win-win-win for our environment, for creating jobs, and for Oregon’s children. That’s why it passed unanimously and every major group supported its passage – from Democrats to Republicans, the conservation community, business, organized labor, teachers and parents. In fiercely partisan times, this is an achievement that will be remembered and that should make us proud to be Oregonians.”
