Governor Kate Brown was the Oregon League of Conservation Voters’ first endorsement for the 2018 election because, as Oregon’s governor, she has protected our public lands, fought to reduce toxic air pollution, and is a strong, public leader in the fight against climate change. Her leadership on the environment is something all Oregonians should be proud of, which is why she earned OLCV’s top award in 2017 – ‘Environmental Champion of the Year.’
While OLCV is encouraged to see Brown’s Republican opponent, State Rep. Knute Buehler, finally acknowledging how important it is to protect our environment, voters should look at his record before believing his campaign ad rhetoric. Buehler voted against protecting our public lands, including voting against funding to keep Oregon’s first state forest – the Elliott State Forest – in public hands. He has continuously opposed and voted against Oregon’s successful Clean Fuels Program, which reduces air pollution from cars and trucks. Buehler also voted against putting a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas exploration and production in Oregon.
OLCV works to elect pro-environment candidates and has never endorsed State Rep. Knute Buehler. OLCV works to pass laws that protect Oregon’s environmental legacy and State Rep. Knute Buehler has voted against those environmental laws nearly two-thirds of the time. Finally, OLCV holds all of our elected officials accountable on the environment. State Rep. Knute Buehler has an OLCV Lifetime Score of just 43%, a failing grade. Oregonians expect much more than an “F” on the environment. Oregonians deserve much better than State Rep. Knute Buehler’s empty claims and promises.
Oregonians care deeply about protecting what we love about this great state. Only Governor Kate Brown has a record we can count on to fight for the great outdoors we love, the clean air and water we depend on, and the natural legacy we must pass to the next generation. OLCV continues to proudly stand with Governor Kate Brown. She has shown time and again that she will stand strong to protect Oregon and Oregonians, to preserve our natural legacy, and lead the way to fight climate change.
