By now, you’ve probably heard what happened. The Senate Republicans don’t like the Clean Energy Jobs bill (HB 2020) so they ran away to prevent a vote. Hiding from their jobs is completely unacceptable. And it’s definitely not the Oregon way. We don’t run away from things just because we don’t get them exactly our way. At least we don’t once we pass the age of about five.
By leaving their jobs, they are holding up incredibly important work, from Oregon’s historic climate bill to paid family and medical leave to funding healthcare and many more programs, budgets, and policies that make a real difference in the lives of Oregonians. Even worse, it’s a privilege to be elected to the Oregon Senate. By running away they are refusing to serve more than 1.5 million Oregonians. When they don’t work, our democracy doesn’t work.
Rumor has it that some of the Senate Republicans are camped out somewhere in Montana, where they hope that Oregon’s state troopers won’t be able to force them home for a vote. I also heard that some might be in Idaho. Beautiful states to visit on vacation, but not places to hide when you are running from your responsibilities in Oregon.
If most of us missed several days of work for no reason, we’d be fired. But Senate Republicans are still being paid; their childish stunt is funded by taxpayer’s money.
I take my vote seriously, and I spend the weeks leading up to every election working to get people to vote, because our democracy works when we all show up to make it work. Senate Republicans need to be reminded of that.
