Less than four months to go!
Summer in Oregon - is there anything finer?
Picnics, trips to the coast, farmer's markets,
gardening, hiking and camping and swimming - Oregon's beauty truly shines in the
summer.
But this year it feels a bit
different.
Oil prices are skyrocketing, while oil executives
rake in record profits. Salmon numbers are declining, harming our coastal
economy and signaling that something is terribly wrong. And the effects of
global warming continue to increase.
The good news: in less than four months, we
have the opportunity to make some significant changes in this critical election
year - IF we are ready.
What's at stake for
Oregon?
We all know
how significant the 2008 election is for our country. But what about Oregon?
We have unique opportunities this year to sweep in a number of new
pro-environment candidates to Oregon's House of Representatives. This would
have a huge impact on our ability to protect Oregon's air,
water, and land, and to combat global warming, in the 2009 Legislative
session.
On the local level, too, we have the chance to elect pro-environment
candidates to several county commissions and city councils all over the
state - but a lot of these races will be very close.
A small investment with a big
payoff
We know that people are feeling
the squeeze right now. But we also know that preserving Oregon's forests,
beaches, rivers and high desert matters to you and your family.
And we know that OLCV's election
program of volunteer recruitment and voter outreach works.
Thanks to the support of people like
you, we won all three of our targeted legislative races in the May primary.
Overall, six of the eight state and
local candidates we backed with volunteers and dollars won their races outright
or are headed to run-offs in the fall.
We are excited for the opportunities
we have this fall and are ready to go to work for
pro-environment candidates. But we must have the resources to do
so.
"I could not have won my race
without OLCV."
So says Jules Kopel-Bailey,
one of the Oregon House races we helped win this spring. He was in a tough
four-way primary, but his message of building a green economy, backed up with
OLCV's support and volunteer action, carried him to victory. (He has no
opponent this fall.)
We know that Jules will be a leader on our
issues in the House. We also know that we must elect more leaders to
join him, so that the Legislature will have the political will to
tackle global warming and other significant challenges.
Please help OLCV seize on the momentum and
opportunities we have this year by making a special gift
today. The election is less than four months away!
We may not have chances like this again for a long
time, and we all know how critical it is for Oregon (indeed, for our planet)
that we stop waiting, and start
acting.
