We are pleased to announce OLCV and the League of Conservation
Voters' joint endorsement of the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives,
Jeff Merkley, for U.S. Senate and Oregon State Senator Kurt Schrader for the
U.S. House of Representatives in the 5th Congressional District.
As the Speaker of the House, Jeff Merkley has made
Oregon a leader in clean energy alternatives. His 96% lifetime environmental
score in the legislature reflects his commitment to clean air, clean water, and
Oregon’s natural beauty. We will miss him in the Oregon legislature, but
America deserves Jeff Merkley’s leadership in the Senate.
"Jeff Merkley’s proven leadership on global warming and clean energy will
help to break the Senate stalemate in Washington,” LCV President Gene Karpinski
said. “Speaker Merkley’s plan to deal with global warming will simultaneously
end America’s addiction to oil, protect the planet for future generations and
bring clean energy jobs to Oregon. He knows that Oregon families deserve real
energy choices.”
As a farmer, veterinarian and small
businessman, Kurt Schrader has been a community leader for 20 years. In the
state legislature, he worked to find a balance that protects Oregon’s scenic
heritage, vital natural resources and agricultural economy.
"Schrader has been a key leader in promoting renewable energy and protecting
Oregon from disastrous land use policies," OLCV Executive Director Jonathan
Poisner said. "He has been an invaluable ally and partner in Oregon and we are
excited to continue our partnership when he represents Oregon in the United
States Congress."
In March, we launched our blog series:
Meet the Candidates.
We asked candidates who have received OLCV's endorsement to introduce
themselves and explain why they are running for
office and how they plan to protect Oregon’s environment.
This week we're introducing Hanten Day. Hanten Day is
campaigning to win the House Seat in District 19 from Kevin Cameron, who scored
45% on OLCV's 2007 Environmental Scorecard.
Unlike Cameron, Day promises to work hard to keep
Oregon's air and water healthy and protect our
environmental legacy for future generations.
Day believes Oregonians deserve to be represented by someone that shares
their values and will work responsibly to keep their families safe. Learn more
on why Day's running on our
blog.
Check our
blog each week to find out who is in the spotlight and what they plan to do
to protect the enivornment you love.
As you know, we will have an historic and unique Presidential
Election this year. And in Oregon, we will have historic and unique
opportunities to sweep in a number of new pro-environment leaders to Oregon's
House of Representatives.
If elected, these pro-environment
Representatives would have a huge impact on our ability to
protect Oregon's air, water, and land, and to combat global warming for Oregon's
future generations.
Be part of this historic and unique opportunity. You
can help support pro-environment candidates today by making a gift to
OLCV.
We have the chance to help elect
pro-environment
leaders in several county commission and city council races all over the state.
In many of these local races our work can be the difference between victory and
loss.
That's why it is essential that we have the resources we need to
fully engage voters in state and local elections this fall.
We know you look for leaders who will champion
renewable energy, work to combat global warming, defend Oregon's air and water
from pollution and preserve our beautiful landscapes, so if you haven't already,
take a minute to take OLCV's pledge to vote for pro-environment leaders this
November. If you know others that share your values, take five minutes
and encourage them to join you.
Visit www.olcv.org/takethepledge to take
the pledge. Remember, when
you've finished, take a moment and forward the pledge to ten friends.
Let's show the folks in Salem that protecting Oregon and
leaving a beautiful healthy legacy for our children is our top
priority!

The
Elkhorn Resort project is a planned destination resort tucked into the North
Santiam Canyon and would expand the 18-hole Elkhorn Valley Golf Course into a
developed recreational complex known as Elkhorn Estates. The plan includes 150
homes, condominiums, a restaurant, meeting space, fitness center and a 40-room
hotel.
The protection of the Little North Fork is a priority and the
hazardous conditions of North Fork and Gates Hill roads, which lead to the
proposed site, are of the greatest concern.
The Marion County Board of
Commissioners has scheduled a work session at 9 AM on Wednesday August 12 to
discuss the issues surrounding the Elkhorn subdivision with their staff. There
won't be an opportunity to speak at the meeting but it is still important to
pack the room. Help us show the board the depth of concern and opposition to
this project.

we'll continue our discussion on what we can do to get our elected officials
more engaged in combating global warming.
And what about
marine reserves? What are they? This event is a unique opportunity for
progressive groups and people that share our values to get together, talk, trade
ideas and strategize about all things Marion County in a social
environment.
If you have something you'd
like to share with like-minded folks, stop by and introduce
yourself.
