OLCV e-bulletin: Endorsements, Canvassing, and Dinner
May 1, 2008 OLCV e-bulletin
Edition 9
|
Make your own
history - vote early!
|
Tomorrow
ballots will be mailed out and many of you will have your ballot in hand by
Saturday afternoon. In 2007, OLCV
worked successfully to help pass legislation that protects Oregon. But we won't
be successful in 2009 without first electing more leaders who share our values:
clean air for our children to breathe; clean water for us to drink and enjoy;
protected forests for us to hike and camp in; and protected farmlands that allow
us to eat local and healthy.
Please visit our
website to find out which candidates have earned OLCV's endorsement
before you cast your vote for Oregon’s future.
Are you planning to vote early this May? Do you know who
you're voting for before you fill out your ballot or do you prefer to read the
voter's pamplet as you go? Share your voting experience or your feelings about
this year's election on our
blog.

Talking to Your
Neighbors
|
|
For some of us, it can be harder to talk to
our family about politics than it is to talk to our neighbors. There are only 20
days left before Election Day, so stop trying to win your brother over and start
talking to people who will listen.
Talking to voters at their doorstep can be quite
rewarding. Watch
this video of Noelle Studer as she explains why she's pounding the streets.

Sign up to hit
the streets in your neighborhood.
OLCV has identified a
number of upcoming leaders who we believe have what it takes to be Oregon’s next
environmental champions in Clackamas, Lane and Multnomah Counties. But several
candidates -- Jules Kopel-Bailey, Jim Middaugh, and Rob Handy to name a few -- are involved
in tough primary races. We are focusing our resources on these and a few other
races where our support can tip the balance.
Sign
up now to help these candidates get
elected!
In Marion County our focus is on helping
elect Lloyd Chapman, who is running to unseat
three-term, developer-backed Mayor Janet Taylor. Lloyd worked as a citizen
involvement specialist with the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and
Development and later served on the board of the Salem-Keizer Transit District,
experience we need at the helm of Oregon’s capitol city. Volunteer for change and help Lloyd
win!

| Choosing the right
leaders with your help |
|
Thanks to those of you who responded to last
week’s email asking for donations to help fuel OLCV PAC’s work in the primary.
If you haven't sent in your contribution yet, you can donate
online now.
Thomas Friedman recently
wrote: “People often ask: I want to get greener, what should I
do? New light bulbs? A hybrid? A solar roof? Well, all of those things are
helpful. But actually, the greenest thing you can do is this: Choose the right
leaders. It is so much more important to change your leaders than change your
light bulbs." New York Times, October 21,2007
Our work to elect pro-environment
leaders is what allows us to pass environmental legislation that protects
Oregon.
We’re still about
$1,500 short of our goal for online donations to pay for our primary campaign.
Please
make your donation today of $100, $50, $35, or whatever you can afford, so
we can keep communicating at full-throttle to voters between now and Election
Day, May 20.

Meet Nick Kahl for
HD 49
|
Over the past
month, we've introduced you to several pro-environment candidates on our blog,
OLCV
Talk. We will continue this campaign
until November 4, 2008.
This week, meet
Nick Kahl.
Nick
Kahl is a young community advocate
who knows the environment must be a priority in Salem. Nick is running for Karen
Minnis' open seat in Troutdale. He plans to bring green jobs to East Multnomah
County to grow the economy in a healthy, sustainable way. By contrast, his
opponent in the Democratic primary is a Troutdale City Councilor who campaigned
against Measure 49 last fall. Learn more about Nick's environmental
values at our
blog. Check our
blog each week to find out who is in the spotlight and what they plan to do to
protect the enivornment you love. Last week we featured Michael Dembrow.

A
record crowd of 870 guests, including 82 elected officials and candidates,
joined OLCV Staff and Board members at OLCV's 11th Annual Dinner last Friday
night.
Rep. Ben Cannon was a stellar MC,
OLCV Executive Director Jonathan Poisner got everyone on their feet at the
start with a stirring speech, and keynote speaker Christine Ervin
delivered a
thought-provoking address on the green building movement. And of course, lots of hobnobbing and
campaigning was accomplished during the
preceding reception and dinner.
Another program
highlight: Debra Higbee received OLCV's
2007 Volunteer of the Year Award - congrats,
Debra!
.jpg) OLCV enthusiastically thanks everyone who
helped make this dinner a success - table sponsors, volunteers, wine
donors, everyone who attended. We are
already looking forward to an even better event next year, and hope you are too!

| Sustainable
Seafood Bake and Silent Auction |
|
Save the Date: Sunday, June 29 at Cafe Mundo [time to
be determined]
The annual Salmon and Tuna Bake is back this year.
But it has a new name and promises to be even better than last's year hit
event.
The Lincoln County Chapter of OCLV has renamed the event
the "Sustainable Seafood Bake and Silent Auction" to draw more awareness to the
fishing crisis at the coast. At the event we'll encourage people to learn more
about sustainable fishing practices as well as serving only sustainable
seafood. Cafe Mundo has agreed to host this popular event in Newport.
This event grows increasingly more popular every
year, so stay tuned for more information. Tickets will be going fast!
There will be more information on our website
soon.
