OLCV e-bulletin: Can the inspiration of the nation help elect pro-environment candidates in Oregon?

can help elect pro-environment candidates |

The
2008 Election season is upon us!
With a
historic presidential election facing voters this November it's easy to overlook
important city, county and state races here in Oregon. Many
of us are still impressed that some of the Presidential candidates have found
Oregon on the map; having visited or are planning a visit to a city near
you.
This year, not only is it very likely
that our votes will count (finally!) in the Presidential primary, but we also
have the opportunity to elect more pro-environement leaders in Oregon - at all
levels of government. But ballots go out in only four weeks so we don't have
much time to get the word out.
The good news is this year's Presidential
candidates are inspiring us to take action and get involved like never
before. Let's build on this momentum and make sure our friends and family are
informed before they cast their ballots in
May. There are many highly qualified
pro-environment candidates running in local and state races throughout Oregon
that need our help. So we'll be talking to voters every week until Election Day
to make sure they know who deserves their vote.
In
Clackamas, Lane and Multnomah Counties, several candidates who have received
OLCV's endorsement are involved in tough primary races. As a result we are
targeting several of these races to make sure we do everything we can to
help the pro-environment candidates win in May.

| A Mayor for the 21st Century |
|
The Marion County Chapter of OLCV
endorsed candidate Lloyd Chapman for Salem Mayor.
Lloyd
Chapman is a candidate for the 21st Century. His message? Bring all the
voices in Salem together to improve the local quality of life. Individuals and
groups need to work together to protect Salem's air and water and the local
farms that are so integral to Salem's successful economy. Most importantly,
Chapman understands that the environment is a value not an
idea.
Your vote is your
voice. Let's send a message: we want responsible leaders in Salem that will keep
Oregon's air and water healthy and safeguard Oregon's environmental legacy for
future generations.
If you haven't yet met Lloyd Chapman, you can meet
him this Saturday. He'll be canvassing the Fairmount Neighborhood in Salem with
a team of enegetic volunteers. Email
Melanie Zermer to sign up to volunteer this Saturday or learn about other
opportunities to help Salem elect a mayor for the
21st Century.

Review OLCV's
endorsements
|
|
We would like to remind you about our 2008 endorsements in city, county and state
races.
We
know you're busy. That's why each year we work hard to identify the candidates who will work the hardest to keep our air and water clean, protect
Oregon's natural beauty and work responsibly to combat global warming. We
interviewed more than 100 candidates, 73 of whom earned our
endorsement. Volunteer to help elect
pro-environment candidates with OLCV.

Meet Peter
Brown, volunteer leader and OLCV activist in Marion County.
"After 30 years as a psychologist, I
decided to step up and enter the fray of environmental politics to defend what
is so special to me. Some may say that I am just a hippie carried over from the
‘60s. But politics and advocating for our rights have been common themes in my
life as far back as my naive teenage years growing up in Michigan. Now I am
proud to advocate for our right to live in a clean, healthy and beautiful
environment!
I have fulfilled my dream to live in
Oregon and have been pursuing a career in environmental politics with OLCV over
the past year and half; most recently as the Chairperson for the Marion County
Steering Committee. I’ve found that OLCV is a perfect blend of my two loves,
politics and the environment.
We’ve worked hard over the past two
years to bring the environmental values that have made Salem great back to
Marion County, knocking on thousands of doors and making hundreds of phone calls
to help elect pro-environment candidates like Represenatative Brian Clem and
City Councilor Laura Tesler.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be a part
of the solution. I hope to continue my association with OLCV for many years to
come!"

Lloyd Chapman.
