Oregonians win BIG: Cleaner, Greener Oregon on the Horizon?

Thanks to strong leadership, mindful collaboration and a public appetite for a cleaner, healthier environment, 2007 was a huge year for environmental legislation. Legislators and lobbyists that support cleaner air, energy and water left the Capitol last Thursday satisfied with several environmental victories under their belt and that adds up to a one big victory for all Oregonians.

All five Priorities of the Oregon Conservation Network passed, as did a number of other environmental bills; marking an unprecedented year of success for over 40 environmental groups.

Clean energy legislation, including a suite of bills to promote renewable energy and energy conservation, led the way (read a summary of all energy legislation that passed) in a delightfully crowded field: biofuels promotion, cleaning up Oregon's waterways, establishing a system for electronic waste recycling and revising Measure 37.

In a recent article, The Stateman Journal reported that 2007 Legislative Session may be the most environmental session since Tom McCall.

"It is a landmark session for the environmentalists," said Dave Barrows, who has been a lobbyist for 48 years. "They have had a very lengthy list of successes ... this is almost exceeding the Tom McCall years."

For a complete summary of major victories (and our few losses) this legislative session, check out this summary prepared by our sister organization, OLCV Education Fund.

Cleaner water? No water? What tops your list of priorities for 2009?

We're checkin' our list...

Senator Brad Avakian and Representative Jackie Dingfelder expressed confidence that this session is just an example of what's to come. We've only just laid the groundwork for more environmental legislation. There is a strong feeling that next session, legislators could be in an even better position to further deal with water supply and storage, global warming and better recycling methods under the bottle bill.

Where do we go from here? 10 cent deposits, stronger protections for ground water supplies or a more active role to slow global warming?

Visit our blog and tell us your top five environmental priorities for 2009.

Fix Measure 37 this fall

Fix 37

Should we protect our quality farmland, forestland and special places from destructive outside interests or do we allow developers to turn our great, green Oregon into a land of stripmalls, sprawling subdivisions and traffic disasters?

This November we'll  have to decide: Keep Oregon green or sell it to the highest bidder?

OLCV will be working to support the campaign to fix Measure 37, which will almost cerainly be Measure 49 (There is a tiny chance it will be called Measure 50 instead). This referral from the Legislature will go a long way toward fixing the worst effects of Measure 37, protecting our best farm and forestlands while providing fairness to landowners.

November may seem like a long time off, but we need to speak with hundreds of thousands of voters before they receive their ballots. We need to act quickly.  Please sign up for at least one of several significant field activities planned before the election.

OLCV has committed to turning out 1000 volunteers for campaign.  Please save us time, money and significant effort and select an event and sign up now.
If you don’t live in Multnomah, Lane or Washington County you can sign up for a future event here.
If you can't commit to any of the listed event dates but really want to get involved, sign up here to host a house party! They're a fun way to raise money, get the word out, hang out with friends or make new ones.

2007 Environmental Scorecard: Coming Soon!
Thanks to those of you who have given over the past week to support OLCV’s Environmental Scorecard on the 2007 Legislature.

We only need $800 more to meet our goal.

Help us publish and distribute our Environmental Scorecard to thousands of Oregonians, please give what you can now to help!

Did your Representative cast the single vote that passed Measure 37 reform?

Did your she vote to expand alternative energy in Oregon?

Did he vote to help keep toxic pollution out of our rivers and streams?
We’ll have it all in our 2007 Environmental Scorecard.

OLCV’s Scorecard separates the real stewards of our environment from those who just talk about it.

Please give what you can so Oregon voters know the score before they vote in 2008.

Prefer not to give online? You can send a check to the address at the left banner of this appeal, with a note saying “OLCV E-Bulletin appeal.”  Thank you!

And thanks again to those of you who have given already! We appreciate your support.
