OLCV e-bulletin Edition 15.5

How Green are you? More importantly how Green is your Representative?

Only you know how green you really are, but everyone can find out how green their legislators are when OLCV releases the 2007 Environmental Scorecard in less than 2 weeks.

Lots of candidates say they support clean air and clean water when they're running for office. But OLCV is the only organization watch-dogging those officials and recording how they VOTE on critical environmental issues.

Find out if your representative is an

or an out of step

The 2007 Environmental Scorecard will be released the week of September 10th.

In the meantime, see how your legislators voted in the past at our website.

Help OLCV choose pro-environment Legislative candidates and help us get answers to some of your burning questions!
Although the 2008 primary is still 8 months away, we're gearing up for the 2008 Legislative elections, developing our endorsement questionnaire for 2008 candidates.

In the past, we have worked with environmental policy experts from around the state to come up with environmental questions for our endorsement questionnaire.

This year, in addition to this, we would like to hear from our members. Visit our blog to post your question about air or water quality, land use, toxics, transportation or any other environmental issue that you would like us to ask legislative candidates.

We will choose 12-15 questions to create the questionnaire. You also can submit questions by emailing Katy.
Thank you for your help!

Two weeks ago, we asked you to send us your best photos of Oregon’s special places.  We knew we would receive some beautiful shots, we just didn’t know exactly how beautiful.

Thanks to everyone who participated! We will be posting the new photos on our website soon.

If you have photos that you would like to see posted on our website or blog, please send them to Tresa.

Please include a brief description of the photo and when and where it was taken.

My first bumpersticker

Katy Daily, our political director at OLCV, explains when a bumper sticker is more than just a bumper sticker.

Ten years ago, I bought my 1997 Volkswagen Cabrio when I was working in high-tech and could afford to buy a brand new car. Since that time I have become more and more politically active: first volunteering on numerous candidate and issue campaigns, then becoming a campaign staffer, and ultimately in my job as Political Director at Oregon League of Conservation Voters.

Obviously, I have a lot of passion for the issues and candidates -- enough to quit my well paying job for a more satisfying, though sometimes stressful job working to protect the state I love. But yet, until this past Tuesday, my 10 year old car was a bumper sticker virgin!
So, what issue is so critical that I was willing to deflower my car’s bumper by attaching a bumper sticker?

Find out why Katy decided it was finally time to stick it to her car. Read the rest of her story at our website.

Upcoming Events in Marion, Multnomah, and Lane Counties
Summer may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to end.
Join us at one of our great upcoming events!

Marion County

Multnomah County

OLCV Multnomah County's Annual Dinner for the Environment
WHEN: Tuesday, September 25, 6:15 pm
WHERE: Ciao Vito! 2203 NE Alberta, Portland

In addition to electing pro-environment candidates, we will be working to pass Ballot Measure 49 (aka - fix Measure 37). BM 49 will preserve Oregon's scenic natural areas and groundwater and protect the rights of small landowners, while closing loopholes that allow unrestrained and environmentally harmful development.

Your sumptuous 3 course dinner will include a glass of wine, animated conversation and an excuse to get out those party clothes! The cost of the dinner is $75, a portion of which is eligible for the $50 Oregon Tax Credit.

To rsvp and make payments/arrangements email Meredith or call (503) 224-4011.

We are proud to announce that her work will be featured in Portland this September at the Waterstone Gallery, starting next Thursday.

Salmon or Tuna: Dinner and Silent Auction in Newport

In August, OLCV's Lincoln County Chapter hosted its fifth annual “Have Your Fish and Eat It Too” Salmon and Tuna extravaganza with a delicious dinner and a great silent auction in Newport.

Laura Svensguaard helps set up auction items at Cafe Mundo

The Chapter would like to thank all of the donors, volunteers, and everyone else who participated.

We would especially like to acknowledge Café Mundo and their excellent staff for the great meal, Oceana Natural Foods Co-op and Panini Bakery for their generous donations, and Dr. Lozelle Jennings & Friends for the excellent music. Thanks to everyone who helped create this wonderful event and those who made it such a success.

Cafe Mundo Newport, Oregon

OLCV is always delighted to work with people and organizations that reflect our values.  We'd like to recognize Laurie Card, chef and owner of Cafe Mundo, who does just that.  At Café Mundo, they use solar power, recycle their empty bottles, use worm composting for organic waste, and provide re-usable cloth napkins and silverware for their guests -- all while providing delicious food and a wonderful dining experience!

If you’re in Newport, stop by Café Mundo and thank them for thinking about the environment. You can also check out Café Mundo's myspace page.

In the meantime you can learn more about the Lincoln County Chapter on their home page.

Canvass or call for Measure 49

We're asking all of our members to commit at least 3 hours on 3 days of the next 45 to support the Measure 49 campaign.

And we're going big. We're working overtime to sign up 100 new volunteers by this time next Thursday. Help us reach our goal.

Sign up to canvass or phone bank in your neigborhood below.

Or email Eamon to find out more.
