Portland, OR – Today, the Oregon League of Conservation Voters (OLCV) and the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club endorsed Brad Avakian for Secretary of State. Avakian, the current Labor Commissioner, has a long-standing record fighting to protect Oregon’s environment and reduce pollution. “No candidate has done more to protect Oregon’s natural legacy. Brad Avakian is the progressive champion in this race,” said Rhett Lawrence, Conservation Director of the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club. “Oregonians can count on Brad Avakian to stand up for our environment.”
Avakian was first elected to the Oregon Legislature in 2002, where his leadership was one of the most important factors in passing the Oregon Renewable Energy Act of 2007, the most significant climate win in a generation. His efforts rightly earned him OLCV’s “Consensus Builder of the Year.” His strong record speaks for itself, including working to protect Oregon waterways from illegal ballast water dumping and invasive species. Avakian has a lifetime rating of 93% from the Oregon League of Conservation Voters. “Brad Avakian was a leader in environmental progress while he served in the legislature,” said Doug Moore, Executive Director at the Oregon League of Conservation Voters. “His progressive positions on climate change and conservation have once again earned him the full support of our organization.”
Avakian thanks the members of the Sierra Club and the Oregon League of Conservation Voters for their endorsement and their tireless effort to preserve Oregon’s natural legacy for future generations. “Oregon should be a global leader in fighting climate change and promoting conservation,” Avakian said. “We should be investing in clean energy programs such as geothermal energy in Deschutes County and wave power infrastructure off our coast. I look forward to working with the Sierra Club and the Oregon League of Conservation Voters to promote progressive energy policies in Oregon as our next Secretary of State.” These endorsements come days after Avakian earned the endorsements of the Oregon Education Association, Planned Parenthood PAC, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon PAC and Ceasefire Oregon.
