As many of you know, the Oregon League of Conservation Voters has been talking about the importance of getting Dick Schouten elected Washington County Commission Chair for months. OLCV Executive Director Jon Isaacs has called this race the most important local race in the state.

Of the some 75 endorsements OLC V has made for 2010, one that may have flown under the radar is our endorsement for Ted Wheeler for Oregon State Treasurer. But what role does the state treasurer have in protecting Oregon’s environment and why is Ted Wheeler the environmental candidate?

As you know, the primary is upon us. We have our ballots and voters pamphlets and are sitting down to decide who to vote for on May 18th. In Lane County, OLCV has been working hard to get voters out for two candidates- Pat Riggs-Henson for Springfield County Commissioner and Jerry Rust for West Lane County Commissioner.

You no doubt know by now that this nation is facing one of the worst environmental disaters in our history.

An oil platform in the the Gulf of Mexico exploded and then sank, creating a disaterous oil leak. If not for an election in a few weeks here in Oregon, I would probably be writing about it daily. Instead, I have been doing my best to track the story and now have a moment to reflect on what it means for the Gulf Coast and Oregon.

Attendees of OLCV’s Annual Dinner for the Environment have for the last few years been able to pair their meal (and conversation with local sustainability-minded enviros) with local, sustainable wine from, among other wineries, Evesham Wood Vineyard.

Last Friday night, OLCV hosted its 13th Annual Dinner for the Environment. It’s not the kind of event that grabs the attention of news reporters, even less so now, when the news media world is populated by fewer reporters every week, who are asked to do more with less.
