Fifty percent plus one

As many of you know, the Oregon League of Conservation Voters has been talking about the importance of getting Dick Schouten elected Washington County Commission Chair for months. OLCV Executive Director Jon Isaacs has called this race the most important local race in the state.

With three candidates in this race, it will not be enough to for Dick simply to get more votes than the others. By law, a bipartisan candidate must receive 50 percent of the vote plus one to win in the primary. That's exactly what it will take for Dick--a proven environmental champion--to win on May 18.

What is at stake if he doesn't win?

First, it will cost us time, money and resources. And running a campaign through the general election in November means the conservation community--both organizations and citizens like you-- puts off other important work in Washington County, like building a pro-environment majority on the Washington County Commission.

Second, without a clear win on Tuesday, there's a door open for a win in the general by another candidate.

Washington County voters have a clear choice.

Dick towers over his opponents as the strong leader that the county needs as it faces tough challenges around growth, sprawl, transportation, and farm and forest protection.

The time to win is now, every vote counts, and we need all the help we can to get 50 percent plus one on Tuesday.

There are volunteer opportunities all weekend to help get every vote in before 8:00 p.m. on May 18th. Please sign up for a shift! We can't delay this win by falling short just a few votes. The stakes are just too high.
