Clearing up confusion about Measures 66 & 67
Yesterday I received a few emails that show that the mis-information from the opposition to Measures 66&67 is confusing Oregon voters. Here is an email I received from a woman named Lois:
This bill needs to be reworked. It will break the backs of Oregon farmers! How about looking at the long term consequences.
I totally understand where the confusion comes from. An op-ed in today's Oregonian written by the president of the Oregon Farm Bureau reinforces the scare tactics that are unfortunately resonating with some Oregon voters.
Here was my reply:
Hi Lois –
Thanks for writing me back. It is my understanding that the way the measures are written they won’t significantly impact the majority (92%) of Oregon’s farmers. Most farms are businesses that are classified as LLCs, and LLCs are required to only pay the $10 corporate minimum, which will only go up to $150/year.
I really believe that Measures 66 & 67 are good for all of Oregon, but they are especially good for rural Oregonians. Rural Oregonians are far more likely to rely on the Oregon Health Plan. Seniors and people with disabilities living in rural Oregon, like my uncle who is a retired logger in Sweet Home, rely more heavily on long-term care programs – in-home care, assisted living, and nursing home care. These measures would help to preserve these vital services. I also feel that kids in Oregon schools today deserve a full school year in addition to full offering of educational programs, such as FFA or 4H, which are being cut all over Oregon because of huge shortages in education budgets.
Thank you for your time

In fact, the vast majority--more than 85%--of Oregon farms are sole proprietorships, so they pay absolutely nothing under Measure 67. Most of the remaining 15% are partnerships, S-corps, or C-corps with less than $500,000 in sales, so they pay only $150. Only 2.2% of farms have enough sales to possibly pay more than $500 under the new corporate minimum tax.
This is why we need to get the word out about these measures by contacting voters and giving them the facts. Please email our organizer Chris if you can volunteer with OLCV to help get the word out.
The solemn expression on her young face, gazing out over the vast ocean before her, speaks volumes to me. This experience must be protected and provided for all generations to come.

Are there really cuts proposed to your uncle's services?
Are you exaggerating? Or misleading?
There is currently estimated to be $90 BILLION in Medicare fraud and $60 BILLION in Medicaid fraud. This sounds like $2 BILLION in fraud per state.
Why not work on stopping fraud?
Instead, the state is increasing employment.
Many of us have worked for the state and we know cuts could be made without hurting Americans. Get it? Americans.
Teachers are selfish beyond belief. First of all, they don't seem to care a twit about whether the students they teach are from another country and are here illegally.
My, my. Why bother to get a college degree if you are essentially a tool for someone else - some other government?
They could be a powerful group and just flat out refuse to cooperate.
But, no.
They pray to some other God, I guess.
Whatever happened to raw courage?
If so few of the farm businesses are going to pay the tax, then why have it? It won't generate any funds.
Why don't you address who WILL pay the millions? Something very shady about this.
Humorous, even.
Forbes or one of the business magazines used to have maps showing states and the level of business they had. California and Washington had so much more than Oregon. We were looking so pitiful.
Now, the teachers - supposedly those who should be concerned about employment - try to discourage business so that they can make sure they get a paycheck.
They are very selfish and use "children". Innocent children who may have unemployed parents!
Let the children vote.
Have you looked at all the groups that oppose these taxes? This includes the North Plains Chamber of Commerce. This is not a huge entity.
There was an article called, "Anti-Business States Awash in Red Ink". I'm sure you can find it online, still.
Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.
We need business!
Most of the people who advocate for this bill are either employed by the state or employed by the counties and cities.
Having been employed by the state, I am worried that this continual selfish voting pattern will truly end up taking us to higher unemployment, huge illegal immigration and other problems we can't even imagine yet.
Our state gets worse and worse, I can say, having been born here and having watched it go downhill more and more.
Our neighborhood was recently struck by the Norteno gang - grafitti 50 feet long and 6 feet high. They did this in 20 locations in one night and it didn't even make the news.
Your little students - such sweeties - be sure to protect their education - even though they aren't (often) even citizens of our country.
You must have your paychecks....I mean - what's important?
I share your love for our state and it's natural resources, but Oregon voters should consider the state's Misery Index when deciding which way to vote on Ballot Measures 66 and 67. At a record high 20 percent, it's not theoretical, it's not sometime in the future, it's real and it's happening now.
You need only to read your local papers or watch your local TV news to see the ongoing human tragedy caused by the blight of joblessness on our state ... read the rest here:

Glad to see you're supporting Measures 66 and 67, ThinkOregon. These measures will protect thousands of jobs right here in Oregon and will keep hundreds of millions of dollars circulating in Oregon's economy. We can protect our most vulnerable, preserve education, protect enforcement of our environmental regulations AND get us on the path to economic recovery. YES on 66 and 67.
Glad you posted this. I read that op-Ed 4 times.
There was clearly something wrong.
He subtley transitioned from m67 into
personal income tax I think. It was hard to tell,
but it was sure confusing.
