Choosing the Right Leaders

People often ask: I want to get greener, what should I do?  New light bulbs?  A hybrid?  A solar roof?  Well, all of those things are helpful. But actually, the greenest thing you can do is this: Choose the right leaders. It is so much more important to change your leaders than change your light bulbs. Thomas Friedman, New York Times, October 21, 2007.

Choosing the right leaders is what OLCV is all about.  Over the next six weeks, we’re working double-time to elect leaders at the city, county, and state levels who’ll promote a better environmental legacy for our kids.

And to do that, we need your help.  Volunteering is one great way to help.  But at this stage in every election, what we need most is your financial support.

How many voters will we be able to educate about which candidates will fight for strong new policies to combat global warming?

We’ll know in a few weeks when we see exactly how our fundraising has gone in April.

Your donations on our secure server of $35, $50, $100, or whatever you can afford are critical so we can:

• Talk to more voters at the doorstep about Jules Kopel-Bailey, an environmental leader facing a tough four-way primary in Portland.

• Call more voters about Nick Kahl, a community advocate in Troutdale facing a tough primary against a woman who campaigned against Measure 49 and would bring that anti-land use attitude into the Legislature.

• Mail to more voters on behalf of Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, who has championed efforts to promote sustainability in Eugene, but faces a tough challenge from her predecessor Jim Torrey, who is receiving tens of thousands of dollars from development interests.

While volunteers fuel much of this work, our ability to expand late campaign activities depends upon resources you provide us.

Our Development Director Molly Kramer budgeted for $2,000 in online donations to help our Primary campaign activities.  But I think we can do better than that!

Your donations of $35, $50, $100, or whatever you can afford will help us ensure Oregon voters “choose the right  leaders” on May 20th.

Thank you for defending Oregon's environmental legacy,

Jonathan Poisner
OLCV Executive Director
