Banning toxic BPA: Oregon should follow international and state examples

A few days ago it was reported that the United Arab Emirates is expected to ban the use of toxic chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles. This comes on the heals of an announcement by the European Union that it will ban BPA from baby bottles starting next year.

I'm getting out the vote

Five days left!

For the past week, I have been working to elect John Kitzhaber as our next Governor at the campaign headquarters in Portland-- and I'll continue this work through Election Day. This election hinges on voter turnout, and turnout depends on volunteers. As I type this blog, we have dozens of people volunteering for Kitzhaber right now, either knocking on doors or calling voters on the phone to make sure that we get out the vote before 8:00 p.m. THIS Tuesday, November 2nd.

The doom: Oregon is facing tough challenges

As we all know, Oregon is in the middle of a budget crisis.

In May, the Office of Economic Analysis issued a revenue forecast for the state General Fund that showed a sharp drop in the money available to fund state programs that support our natural resources, as well as critical services like healthcare and schools. State officials predict a deficit of $577 million for the current 2009-11 biennium, which ends next June.

Last week, I attended the national League of Conservation Voters' (LCV) annual Lobby Day as well as LCV's 40th Anniversary Dinner in Washington DC. As always, spending time in Washington DC was truly wonderful. It is a beautiful city with a ton of political energy. For political and policy wonks like me, this is one of my favorite places to spend time.
