Right now our legislative leaders in Salem are working to assemble Oregon’s budget for the next two years. While this is a tough job, it’s also one of the most critical ones for our environment.

In a few hours we’ll know a lot about the future of Clackamas County.

Our Sellwood Bridge is one of the most structurally unsound bridges in the country, and is literally falling to pieces. Will we be able to afford to rebuild it?

Will the 30,000 of us who cross the Sellwood Bridge daily have to cope if the bridge collapses? Or will we step up and protect this vital piece of our transportation infrastructure.

There’s only one week left until ballots are counted and two very important elections are coming down to the wire. Both of these campaigns need your help today.

Clackamas County Measure 3-372: Building a New, Safe Sellwood Bridge

With ballots arriving this past weekend I want to encourage all OLCV members and Portland residents who care about the environment to vote YES for Portland Schools. I especially encourage you to vote yes on 26-121, the new school facilities bond measure.

Yesterday, we were privileged to hear two great speeches by Oregon leaders that powerfully made the case that protecting our public health, protecting the environment and growing our economy go hand in hand. One was made on the floor of the U.S. Senate and one was made on the floor of the Oregon State Senate.

Here's video of the floor speech made by U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley. Senator Merkley spoke in opposition to attempts by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and others to gut the Clean Air Act.

I just authored and posted a column on BlueOregon.com which shows how banning plastic bags is good for Oregon's economy.  I encourage you to read and discuss it there.

With the new year, OLCV switches gears from a focus on election work to a focus on the Legislative Session. It’s part of the two-year cycle we work in: electing strong, pro-environment leaders and then working with them to pass strong laws that protect the environment, the economy and our health. OLCV will be in Salem every day with the Oregon Conservation Network with those goals in mind.

This morning I had a wonderful breakfast meeting with Metro President-elect Tom Hughes.  We spoke for almost two hours and pledged to work closely together during Tom's term as Metro President.

The 24 hours after polls closed on Tuesday were tough. But yesterday afternoon, we finally got the news we were confident we’d hear: John Kitzhaber has been elected Oregon’s next governor! We knew it would be a tight race, but thanks to OLCV supporters around the state, the environmental community played an important role in making sure Oregon did not let Chris Dudley become Oregon’s environmental disaster. Check out the story in The Oregonian.

We're almost there. Election Day is tomorrow and OLCV staff and volunteers have talked to thousands of voters to Get Out the Vote and make sure OLCV-endorsed candidates win. Many races around the state are going to be very close, and the governor's race is tied. We've got a great opportunity to elect pro-environment candidates around the state. Getting those ballots turned in is how we win.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column for BlueOregon focusing on the absurd amount of money Stimson Lumber and other old-guard timber companies had dumped into Chris Dudley's campaign for governor. (Incidentally, yesterday Stimson funneled another $100,000 to Dudley bringing their total to a staggering $385,000.)

I want to give Tom Hughes a lot of credit.  I just spoke with him on the phone where he showed a lot of class apologizing for his campaign's repeated suggestion that he was supported by OLCV.

I want to make it very clear -  OLCV has endorsed Bob Stacey for Metro President

Momentum is building for a Kitzhaber win as ballots arrive in mailboxes this week.

On Monday, Rasmussen Reports, a notoriously Republican-leaning pollster, showed John Kitzhaber with a two-point lead over Dudley. Last month the same polling showed Dudley leading by five--that’s a seven-point swing in one month. The race is still considered a toss-up by experts across the political spectrum, but these numbers show that the tide is starting to turn: now we need to ride it.

Almost exactly two years ago, one week before the historic election that would propel him to the Presidency, Barack Obama delivered one of the most inspiring speeches of the campaign.  The Obama team created a video production of the speech entitled "We Have a Lot of Work to Do", which is as good, if not more inspiring than the speech itself.  With three weeks to go in the 2010 election I think we all need to watch and listen to "We Have a Lot of Work to Do" again.  But this time we need to pay attention to exactly what then
