Will Hobbs

OLCV Washington County Chapter Steering Committee

Born and reared in the Midwest, Will spent his grade school and high school years in bands and choirs, and his college years hitching from coffee house to coffee house as a singer/songwriter. He has been environmentally active since the mid 60’s, after seeing the beauty of this great country and realizing that “man against nature” was a terrible philosophy. He wrote a song for a TV commercial advertising the very first Earth Day. Drawn by its pristine forests and rivers and strong environmental consciousness, he finally landed in Eugene, Oregon in 1971, acoustic guitar in hand, where he founded a popular northwest band called Wheatfield; one of Wheatfield’s “greatest hits” was a song Will penned called “The Whale Song (Roll Back the Years),” which received airplay around the Northwest and elsewhere, pleading the case of the over-hunted whales.

From the 1980’s until recently, Will used his engineering skills to advance the state of the art in the computer and Internet revolution, while rising to a senior position at Intel and raising his family of 3 children. Music has re-entered his life, as he has penned a few more environmentally-oriented songs. After running for Congress in 2008, his political and environmental activities have continued to occupy more of a center stage. Now retired at the ripe old age of 63, Will plans to continue to use his skills and time to leave future generations with a livable planet.
